Report on the People's Climate March

On September 8 People’s Climate Marches were held in 250 cities across the world. In Duluth a diverse and spirited group of 200 and 250 people from across the region converged for a march and rally. The event began at the American Indian Community Housing Organization’s building, from which a brief march was held to City Hall, where the main rally was held. Afterwards, the remaining protesters marched down to Bayfront Park, where the annual Harvest Festival was taking place.

The theme of the event was “Climate, Jobs and Justice!” The event’s signs, literature and speakers sought to not only highlight the critical need to take immediate action to combat climate change, but also the need to interweave the struggle for the planet with the movements of indigenous peoples, labor and social justice.

Groups that endorsed and participated in the Duluth People’s Climate March included: AICHO, Bag it Duluth, Global Catholics Climate Movement, Catholic Climate Covenant, Citizens Climate Lobby, Duluth for Clean Water, Duluth Sister Cities International, Ecolibrium3, Izaak Walton League of Duluth, League of Women Voters, MN Interfaith Power & Light, MPIRG, NAACP Duluth, Our Revolution-Duluth, People of Conscience-Affiliated with Lake Superior Free Thinkers, RREAL-Rural Renewable Energy Alliance, Save the Boundary Waters, Sierra Club, Socialist Action, Take Action Minnesota, Veterans for Peace, Twin Ports DSA, Feminist Action Collective, Witness for Peace, Feminist Justice League, Washburn County Community Rights Association, Peace of Mind Project, The Climate Mobilization, Native Lives Matter.
